Subsea Cable Route Engineering & Permitting
Independent technical consulting for subsea power, telecommunications, and renewables infrastructure. From desktop route studies to regulatory filings, grounded in 20 years of marine geoscience and survey experience.
View ServicesWhat We Do
Early-Phase Feasibility & Concept Development
Technical support from initial route concept through critical issue screening — identifying fatal flaws, geohazard red flags, permitting barriers, and environmental constraints early, before they become costly. Delivers a route concept grounded in what can actually be installed, buried, and maintained over system life.
Cable Route Studies
End-to-end desktop route analysis integrating bathymetric, geophysical, and geotechnical datasets to identify optimal corridors and quantify geohazard exposure.
ICPC Desktop Studies
Standardized desktop route studies conforming to ICPC recommendations, covering natural and anthropogenic hazards, regulatory constraints, and cable protection requirements.
Geohazard Assessment
Systematic identification and characterization of seabed and sub-seabed hazards — slope instability, active faulting, shallow gas, scour, and mobile sediment — with risk-informed recommendations for cable routing and burial.
Cable Burial Feasibility
Assessment of burial tool performance and target depth achievability along proposed routes, integrating soil properties, seabed morphology, and equipment capability.
Permitting Support
Technical support for BOEM and USACE permitting processes, including SAP, COP, and Departure Request content development, MSIR and MARA review, and geophysical/geotechnical reporting for regulatory submissions.
Route & Site Surveys
Survey planning, specification development, and data QC/interpretation for geophysical and geotechnical site investigations supporting cable route selection and design.
Background
Sunburst Geo, LLC provides independent technical consulting in subsea cable route engineering, geohazard assessment, and offshore permitting. The practice is built on over 20 years of direct survey and field experience studying marine geology and geotechnical properties across the U.S. East Coast shelf and in more than 20 countries worldwide — with more than 16 years focused specifically on subsea cable systems.
The founding consultant is a classically trained physicist and earth scientist with deep expertise in optimizing the design, planning, and protection of pre-installation cable routes and burial strategies for power transmission, renewables, and telecommunications systems.
On the regulatory side, the practice offers extensive hands-on knowledge of BOEM permitting for U.S. offshore wind and USACE permitting for telecommunications infrastructure — including technical oversight of SAP, COP, and Departure Request filings, and review of MSIRs, Ground Model Reports, MARAss, and NSRAs in support of COP submissions for U.S. offshore wind clients.
